In 1960 Jane Jacobs’s book The Death and Life of Great American Cities sent shockwaves through the architecture and planning worlds, with its exploration of the consequences of modern planners’ and architects’ reconfiguration of cities. Jacobs was also an activist, who was involved in many fights in mid-century New York, to stop “master builder” Robert Moses from running roughshod over the city. This film retraces the battles for the city as personified by Jacobs and Moses, as urbanization moves to the very front of the global agenda. Many of the clues for formulating solutions to the dizzying array of urban issues can be found in Jacobs’s prescient text, and a close second look at her thinking and writing about cities is very much in order. This film sets out to examine the city of today though the lens of one of its greatest champions.

上海の恋人の物語。旅行社で日本人のツアーアレンジに邁進する青年、両親は「中国人も日本人のごとく働き蜂になるか？」と案ずる。その両親は国営企業を引退しても年金では暮らせず、細々料理店を営む。一方美貌を武器に生きていこうとする恋人、仕事ばかりの彼に戸惑いながら、ふたりの将来に、と勝手にマンションを買ってしまう。親にとっては、どちらも「理解しがたい新世代」。開発で古い家並みが次々消える上海の都会にもまれる老若男女四人の日常を描く。郭静監督は「自分たちも上海の激変に戸惑っている。壊される古い街並み、変わる価値観、皆が、この先社会はどうなるの？と感じる不安を描いた。」という。 　　上海経済の急成長を象徴するモーレツ社員の青年を主人公に、「日本人並みに働きバチになった」上海の人たちの姿をシニカルに見つめるドキュメンタリー。主人公の青年の恋人は、彼のモーレツぶりに戸惑い、彼の気を引こうと勝手にマンションを買ってしまう。一方、彼の両親は国営企業を引退したにも関わらず、年金では生きていけないと、不慣れなレストラン経営に乗り出したが上手くいかず、老いた夫婦にはケンカが絶えない。気丈な母は「息子は働きすぎ」と嘆きながらも、夫を怒鳴りながら黙々と働く日々。「働くって何だ？」と、青年の自問自答が始まる。 　　“NHK和中国青年导演郭静、柯丁丁，用了一年时间联合推出的《上海城市男孩的忧郁》，是一部很值得花1小时50分钟观看、花更多时间思考的纪录片，尤其是25-40岁的北上广深等都市漂泊一族。因为本片讲述的就是我们身边的人，或者说就是我们自己。 　　本片对从事纪录片、摄影等视觉文化的研究和实践者，也会有启发。”

一直生活在台南的青年李士祥只身一人前往台北，只为了寻找失散多年的妹妹。在台北，李士祥结识了妹妹的旧相识落雷和老虎，在两人的帮助之下，李士祥正式开始了他的寻亲之旅。在穿梭在台北的大街小巷间的过程中，李士祥目睹了发生在这里的种种乱象以及多桩惨剧，令他认识到了生活的不易，而妹妹一直以来的毫无音信亦让李士祥开始感到灰心。 老胡是一名退伍军人，退伍后，他同名叫王满娇的女人结了婚。王满娇是一个非常蛮横又霸道的女人，老胡在家里天天受她欺负。让老胡没有想到的是，某一日，王满娇竟然带着女儿服毒自杀了。巨大的打击让老胡的精神崩溃了。
